The Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen has been supporting the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg since 1956 through acquisitions ranging from ancient to contemporary art. The works acquired by the Stiftung remain its own property but are offered on permanent loan to the two museums. The aim of the Stiftung’s work is to give Hamburg as a prominent cultural centre access to the very best in the field of fine and applied arts. A growing number of committed private donors, annual grants from Hamburg’s Cultural Affairs Department as well as the Hermann Reemtsma Stiftung and the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius facilitate Hamburg’s ongoing work in promoting art. As part of these efforts, the Stiftung Hamburger Kunstsammlungen was established as a public-private partnership between private patrons and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and meanwhile has over 200 supporters who donate annually and maintain friendly ties with the Kunsthalle.
