100 Master Drawingsfrom the Hamburger Kunsthalle

In summer 2003 the Kupferstichkabinett will show a selection of drawings in Hamburg before they travel on to Athens. In total 100 drawings by German artists of the 19th century from the museum's outstanding collection should contribute to the understanding of German art and culture in Greece on the occassion of the Cultural Olympics 2003 in Athens. There, they will be on show in the National Gallery of Athens.

The exhibition covers a wide spectrum of the Romantic world ranging from the drawings with religious features by the Nazarenes, to the art of Realism and early Symbolism up to Impressionism. On display will be works of important artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Philipp Otto Runge, Friedrich Overbeck, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Franz Ludwig Catel, Carl Blechen, Adolph von Menzel, Carl Spizweg, Anselm Feuerbach, Max Klinger, Wilhelm Leibl and Max Liebermann.

A comprehensive catalogue is to be published containing reproductions of, and comments on, all exhibits. The presentation in Athens will be accompanied by a Greek edition.

The exhibition will also be shown in the National Gallery of Athens, 8 September – 3 November 2003.
